PSHE

Theological Underpinning

Jesus was radical in the way he spoke ‘truth to power’. He demanded that fairness be an abiding principle, to do to one’s neighbour what one would have done to you. Jesus saw the strength in ordinary people and their voice. He was not interested in symbols of power but in the unity of the many coming together. As Christians, we have a duty to spread this message: that we are all born and remain equal in the eyes of God and everyone must have a voice.

NC Programme of Study Aims

PSHE is a non-statutory subject. To allow teachers the flexibility to deliver high-quality PSHE it is considered unnecessary to provide new standardised frameworks or programmes of study. PSHE can encompass many areas of study. Teachers are best placed to understand the needs of their pupils and do not need additional central prescription.

However, while it is believed that it is for schools to tailor their local PSHE programme to reflect the needs of their pupils, it is expected that schools use their PSHE education programme to equip pupils with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions.

Schools should seek to use PSHE education to build, where appropriate, on the statutory content already outlined in the national curriculum, the basic school curriculum and in statutory guidance on: drug education, financial education, sex and relationship education (SRE) and the importance of physical activity and diet for a healthy lifestyle.

Sex and relationship education

Sex and relationship education (SRE) is an important part of PSHE education and is statutory in maintained secondary schools. From September 2020 it became compulsory for all schools to teach Health Education.

When any school provides SRE they must have regard to the Secretary of State’s guidance; this is a statutory duty.

The Key Dimensions

At the core of PSHE are 5 key dimensions that make up Emotional Literacy and enable each of us to fulfil our potential. These components underlie every aspect of our daily life:

  • Self-awareness
  • Managing feelings
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social skills

Curriculum

Personal, Social and Health Education is fundamental for unlocking the full potential in all of our children. It includes the social, emotional, physical, moral and intellectual aspects of growth.  All Saints’ recognises PSHE as crucial to our children’s development as responsible, confident and considerate people. It provides the means by which young children are taught to reflect upon their actions and their behaviour towards others. It happens both formally in weekly timetabled lessons and many PSHE topics are also taught within other subject areas and as part of cross-curricular projects : Science, Computing, Geography, RE, English and History.

Citizenship is also a part of the PSHE framework and we emphasise the development of social and moral responsibility, community involvement and some basic aspects of political literacy e.g. knowing what democracy is and about the basic institutions that support it both locally and nationally. For example in Year 5 pupils attend a Junior Citizen Event run by Wandsworth LA. PSHE will also be touched upon on a daily basis as the need arises. At times, teachers may choose to hold an additional circle-time session in response to a particular event or issue.

Residential trips are organised for Years 4, 5 and 6 to support children with building firm relationships and understanding the importance of team work.

Meditation and Mindfulness

Class teachers include daily meditation sessions to contribute to mindfulness and emotional health.

Zones of Regulation and/or Social Skills

Your child may be asked to attend a smaller group to further support their Social and Emotional Literacy. These focus on the five key dimensions.

Clubs

The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular clubs which promote the children's health and wellbeing, for example Sports Clubs, Drama, Dance, Choir and Ukulele, Wellbeing through Art and Wellbeing through Cooking.

Assemblies

Assemblies provide a daily opportunity to enhance pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development, promoting the school’s values and celebrating achievement. Each half term a whole school assembly introduces a new theme linked to one of the core values of our vision and ethos.
