Computing
NC Programme of Study Aims
The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
- can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
Curriculum
At All Saints’, we want children to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology, equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to participate successfully in an increasingly digital world. Computing is about more than simply using devices; pupils learn to think logically, solve problems, create and communicate using technology.
In the Early Years, children encounter technology naturally through experiences and connections across the seven areas of learning. They explore how technology works in their everyday lives, develop early problem-solving skills and begin to understand how to use digital tools purposefully, appropriately and safely.
From Year 1 onwards, we follow Kapow Primary to provide a carefully sequenced Computing curriculum. Pupils build their knowledge and skills across computer science, information technology and digital literacy, including programming, creating digital content, handling data and developing an understanding of computer systems and networks.
At All Saints’, we place particular emphasis on using technology purposefully. Where appropriate, children apply their computing knowledge across the wider curriculum, using digital tools to research, create, communicate and solve problems. Knowledge and skills are revisited and developed over time so pupils become increasingly confident and independent.
Online safety is woven throughout our Computing curriculum. Through Kapow, alongside our wider safeguarding and PSHE provision, children regularly learn how to stay safe online, protect personal information, communicate respectfully, think critically about digital content and recognise when they should seek help from a trusted adult.
Underpinned by our Christian vision and values, we encourage pupils to think not only about what technology enables them to do, but how they can use it wisely, respectfully and responsibly. We want every child to leave All Saints’ as a capable, thoughtful and responsible digital citizen, prepared to use technology confidently, creatively and safely.
